Garmin Nuvi 1300 Update -- Garmin Nuvi 1300 Upgraded to Garmin Nuvi 40

The Garmin Nuvi 1300 has been upgraded to a newer model, the Garmin Nuvi 40. The following article has been written to help those who are considering making a purchase of a new personal navigation GPS device understand what this change means in terms of the functionality of both models -- what you'll be getting vs. what you'll be giving up.

Garmin Nuvi 40

Garmin Nuvi 40 is a new 4.3"  basic navigator in Gamins  2012 Essential series offered at a much lower price than earlier entry-level models. The Garmin Nuvi 40 series is available in the entire US except for Hawaii and Alaska.

Although it is a basic navigator, you get most of the usual features that you expect from a GPS. The Nuvi 40 model is a sort of refined model and has many features common with the Nuvi 1300. A few new features have been added to make it more versatile. However, it does not have a few features that are offered in the Nuvi 1300.

Key Features of Nuvi 40:

It has some added features such as speed limit indicators and  3D junction view, which are nice for such a low-priced device

Nuvi 40 includes a speed limit display that is just not only available on highways, but also on several secondary roads as well. In case you exceed the specified speed limit, the speed field turns red warning you.

Lane Assist shows an icon for next turn and indicates the proper lane that you should be in. Primarily, you are able to see it on freeways and a few streets in urban areas. There is a fairly extensive coverage.

The junction View is designed in a way to make the navigation much easier. When you enter the address of a targeted location, the  lane assist with junction view help you make correct turns  with signs.

The Customizable Data fields display offers different choices to customize data  whether you are navigating or not. The trip log enables you to view where you have been and can help your navigation. You can see or hide this information but cannot clear its trip log.

Common Features With Garmin Nuvi 1300:

There are a number of features which are common in these two devices.

Both are slim and sleek and easy to carry with almost same dimensions and weight.

Features such as Text-to-speech,  3D map view,  480-by-272-pixel display, 4.3 inch WQVGA color TFT  touch screen with backlight and colorful, animated map graphics are same.

Both have a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, high-sensitivity receiver, built-in internal memory, provision for memory extension with an SD card, voice prompts, lane assist, voice announcement of street names, Where Am I, Where To, preloaded POIs and custom POIs features. This USB mass storage device is compatible with Windows XP or newer and Mac OS X 10.4 or later

Nuvi 1300 is enabled with pedestrian navigation capability. It comes preloaded with City Navigator NT street maps and  optional CityXplorer maps. Its public transit mode enables you to navigate using trams, metro, buses and suburban rail systems. It can be helpful with its ecoRoute feature by following fuel-efficient routes to save fuel and time. Nuvi 40 lacks these important features. However, Nuvi 40 provides a Junction view by displaying junction signs. Its speed limit indicator displays speed limits on major roads in the U.S. and Europe.

Garmin 1300  has travelers tools such as world travel clock, calculator and  unit and currency converter, which are missing in the Nuvi 40.

Nuvi 40 does not have a picture viewer and  GarminLock (anti theft) that is provided in the Nuvi 1300.

Unavailable Features:
